untouched rainforest
Just the name Madagascar conjures up images of David Attenborough exploring an untouched rainforest, and creatures that show an evolutionary path quite unlike any you’ll discern anywhere else. Lemurs, of course, are synonymous with the jungle of Madagascar; but there’s much more to this surprising country off the coast of Africa. As well as virtually unrivalled national parks, the island has a fringe of splendid beaches that give you access to the crystal waters of the Indian Ocean and a wealth of multi-coloured marine life.
Here are our expert consultants’ favourite reasons for visiting Madagascar.
MADAGASCAR’S ABUNDANT RAINFORESTS
80% of Madagascar’s wildlife is unique. So hiking through the island’s rainforests is the best way to really ‘feel’ one of the world’s richest natural areas. And meet some of the planet’s most surprising creatures. 63 different types of lemurs, leaf tailed geckos, giraffe necked weevils…
THE INDRI IN ANDASIBE NATIONAL PARK
An early morning walk in Andasibe National Park can be a hair-raising experience. The first time you hear the haunting cry of the island’s largest lemur calling to its mate will make your neck hair stand up. You’ll also see rare orchids and endemic flora.
DANCING LEMURS
The gardens of Anjajavy are lovely, even by Madagascan standards. But they also have an element of comedy – provided by Coquerel’s Sifada with its hilarious, dancing gait. And after the act you can relax on beautiful beaches backed by dry deciduous forest that teems with wildlife.
WHALE WATCHING FROM ILE SAINTE MARIE
Every year the Ile Sainte Marie plays host to an extraordinary event, and you’re invited to attend. Those global travellers, humpback whales arrive off the coast on their eternal planetary migration and can be clearly seen from the coast. For a closer look, take a boat excursion.
THE BEACHES OF TSARABANJINA
As a complete contrast from pushing your way through a lush rainforest, you can snorkel in the clear, warm waters of the Indian Ocean and discover a completely different world. But one that is no less colourful or diverse. And the beaches invite you to play Robinson Crusoe.
MANDRARE RIVER CAMP
Spend three days at this remote river camp and you’ll gain a real insight into Madagascar’s more far flung regions. Experienced and knowledgeable guides will walk with you through the jungle, taking you to meet ring-tailed lemurs and revealing the secrets of the forest.
PISCINE NATURELLE IN ISALO NATIONAL PARK
You’ll find that the Isalo National Park is a rather special place – especially beautiful and the home of many uniquely Madagascan creatures, including a large number of those irresistible lemurs. And your trek culminates in the chance to bathe in the crystal clear waters of hidden jungle pools.
