CHARMING RURAL SCENES
If you’re enticed by charming rural scenes and sleepy villages, simply ask us to feature Mai Châu in your bespoke Vietnam itinerary.
In rural northwest Vietnam, the valley of Mai Châu feels worlds away from any bustling city. It is in fact just a few hours from Hanoi, offering travellers a breath of fresh air and the chance to be immersed in quintessential Vietnamese life.
It borders the man-made yet incredibly beautiful Hoa Binh Lake, and is as yet relatively untouched by mass tourism.
There isn’t much to the town itself, but it’s a great spot for unwinding in scenic surroundings, with some wonderful walking and cycling to be had in the surrounding rice fields – meeting friendly locals as you go. Don’t miss a refreshing dip in the Go Lao waterfall or an afternoon kayaking on the lake.
Dotting the surrounding hills and patchwork rice paddies are small ethnic minority villages home to tribes including the H’mong and White Thai. You can see skilled local weavers working at their looms, farmers working the fields with their water buffalo and selling handicrafts at the sunday morning market. Visitors spend the night in traditional stilted bungalows (see Mai Châu Ecolodge) and dine on excellent home-cooked cuisine.
