ABOUT THE TOUR
Join Hamish Van Gruisen to discover this extraordinary island nation where cutting-edge innovation exists beside a strong reverence for tradition. Our journey through Japan will reveal futuristic cities, meditative Zen gardens, centuries-old Buddhist and Shinto shrines and an incredible cuisine.
We begin in Tokyo, one of the largest cities in the world, with its huge skyscrapers, underpasses, overpasses and crowds of pedestrians. The city has a vibrant charm all of its own and at every turn you will be met with an array of sights, sounds and smells to enliven the senses. We continue to Kanazawa, one of Japan’s best-preserved historical cities, with a wonderful samurai quarter, fascinating geisha district and Kenrokuen, one of Japan’s most beautiful landscape gardens.
We travel on to the Japanese Alps encompassing the Hida, Kiso and Akaishi ranges of mountains which rise majestically in northern Honshu. We stop briefly at the beautiful, traditional village of Shirakawago, en route to Takayama, in the heart of the Hida Mountains. This is a delightful town known for its old town area of narrow streets containing many well-preserved inns, tea houses, shops and merchants’ houses with latticed windows and overhanging roofs characteristic of the Edo period (1603-1868).
A highlight of our tour is Kyoto, home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines. It boasts an array of world-class gardens and delicate cuisine and is famed for its mysterious geisha who can be glimpsed scuttling down the backstreets. From here we take a day trip to Nara, the first permanent capital of Japan, which has a wealth of Buddhist and Shinto heritage with a series of exquisite temples set within beautiful Nara Park.
Our final stop before returning to Tokyo is Hakone, a beautiful national park area around 50 miles west of Tokyo and just to the south of Mount Fuji, Japan’s most sacred peak. providing one of the best chances of getting a view of its near perfect symmetrical form soaring skywards and towering over the surrounding hills.
