GREAT WLDERNESS

Home to arguably the finest national park in South America, Chilean Patagonia is one of earth’s last great wilderness areas. Spectacularly wild, it’s a haven for the avid adventurer, with landscapes that encapsulate untouched forests, vivid turquoise lakes, raging rivers and immense peaks.

From sailing the wild fjords of Tierra del Fuego to horse riding with gauchos across the Patagonian Steppe, ‘adventure’ here comes in many forms.

In the south, the granite spires and 1,000-year-old glaciers of Torres del Paine National Park can inspire awe in even the most seasoned traveller. It’s the region’s headlining attraction, but far from the only draw.

One of the best ways to experience Patagonia is on foot. The entire region is a trekker’s paradise, offering everything from week-long wilderness trails to gentle day hikes to see guanacos and condors.

Consider basing yourself at a traditional working estancia – a wonderful way to connect with the land and gaucho culture that has dominated here for centuries.

For those looking to get off the beaten path, the remote northern region of Aysén offers the best of Patagonia without the crowds. Hire a car and take a road trip along the famous Carratera Austral highway to soak up the stunning mountainous scenery, stopping to fish, kayak and visit iconic cave systems.

We can design a luxury holiday to Patagonia that also includes whale watching off Chiloe Island, mountain biking around the Chilean Lake District or rafting on the Rio Futaleufú – the ‘Grand Canyon of South America’ whose waters course through deep canyons and thick forest. Not to mention the mighty Atacama Desert.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is Patagonia so famous?

Wild (and incredibly varied) natural landscapes are Patagonia’s main claim to fame. With virgin forests, soaring mountains, icy glaciers and dazzling lakes in varying shades of emerald-green, prepare for awe-inspiring views at every turn.

What airport do you fly into for Patagonia?

Usually Punta Arenas, from which you will take a transfer of three hours through Chilean Patagonia to Puerto Natales, the gateway to the Torres Del Paine National Park. There are direct flights to Puerto Natales, but these are less common and reliable, and often involve a very early start in Santiago.

What is the difference between Argentina Patagonia and Chilean Patagonia?

The cause of fierce debate in the Latin America team, we think it comes down to scale. Argentine Patagonia is vast; it can take weeks to explore and has more variety in its attractions and activities. It can often be a more authentic experience, with remote estancias dotting the pampas, but you won’t find the luxury of Chilean Patagonia, nor the concentrated beauty of the Torres Del Paine – arguably the most beautiful place in South America.
