DRAMATIC LANDSCAPES & INCAN RELICS
The stunning scenery of the remote north-west region of Argentina is a delight for the avid photographer. Travellers here are rewarded with striking desert landscapes studded with cacti, untouched ancient hill towns and impressive geological formations.
Choose the road less travelled and discover the epic and exciting region of northwest Argentina. Rich in dramatic mountains, canyons, salt lakes and sierras, the area also oozes Andean charm with grazing Vicuña, handicraft markets and relics of Inca civilisation.
The beautiful city of Salta is the starting point for most adventures in the northwest. It’s known for its exquisite colonial architecture, but it also has a fun side with a range of restaurants, bars and cultural events. From the city, you can set off to discover the contrasting colours of the Calchaqui Valley and the fine wines of Cafayate, or drive through soaring canyons to sparkling mesmeric salt flats and faraway settlements.
You could also visit the colonial village of Purmamarca, set at the foot of the astonishing Hill of Seven Colours where different geological eras are picked out in purple, red, green, ochre, brown, yellow and white rocks.
The setting for Argentine independence, Tucuman is the smallest province in the northwest. Dotted with charming agricultural towns and blessed with splendid scenery, Tucuman acts as a fantastic base for mountain climbing, horse riding and paragliding.
