RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE
Far out to the west and rising like a jewel from the sands of the great Thar Desert, is the Golden City of Jaisalmer.
Surrounded by the vast expanse of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer is an enchanting and beautiful addition to your India itinerary. It’s somewhat commercial edge is more than made up for by spectacular architecture and a rich cultural heritage.
This princely state is known as the Golden City due to its plethora of yellow sandstone buildings, of which the mighty Jaisalmer Fort dominates.
Buttressed by 99 bastions, this 800-year-old hilltop citadel is one of the world’s few “living forts”, with nearly a quarter of Jaisalmer’s population residing here. Concealed behind the fort’s massive walls are narrow twisting lanes, brightly decorated shops, magnificent havelis, a royal palace and intricate Jain Temples carved from the same honey-coloured sandstone as the fort itself.
Take a guided walking tour along the fort’s winding alleys and you’ll experience a way of life that has virtually unchanged over the last few centuries. Hawkers sell their colourful wares and bullock carts still amble up and down the streets. Visit the Thar Heritage Museum to see an intriguing collection of Jaisalmer artefacts including fossils, musical instruments and kitchen equipment. Include a sunset camel safari in the nearby sand dunes to complete your Jaisalmer experience.
