ABOUT THE ITINERARY
Kenya is the archetypal destination for world-class safaris. If you want to seek out the ‘Big Five’, ride horseback across game-rich plains and witness one of the world’s largest migrations of land animals.
On this 10-day itinerary, you’ll experience the untamed beauty of the Laikipia Plateau whose sweeping plains are peppered with countless predators and huge herds of elephant and zebra. Staying at a wonderful working ranch, you’ll be able to fill your time with horseback safaris, exciting night game drives, birdwatching and camel treks.
From Laikipia, you’ll make your way to the legendary Maasai Mara for three nights of awe-inspiring game viewing and the chance to watch the thunderous annual migration of wildebeest on their way to fresh feeding grounds.
NAIROBI
Arriving in Nairobi, you will be warmly met and transferred by private vehicle to your polished hotel.
Stay: One night at Tamarind Tree
LAIKIPIA
Today you’ll be transferred to your accommodation at the heart of the Laikipia Plateau where you’ll find a staggering quantity of wildlife in the shadow of Mount Kenya. Staying close to the beautiful Ewaso Narok River on Sosian’s 24,000-acre private working ranch, you can expect to enjoy a unique and quality game-viewing experience.
As well as rare and endangered species like Jackson’s hartebeest, oryx and Grevy’s zebra, the conservancy’s grassy plains and acacia woodland are home to gazelle, cheetah, buffalo, lion, giraffe and wild dog. Elephants can be seen here in their hundreds, whilst the region’s birdlife comprises over 350 different varieties. In addition to fantastic riding safaris on well-schooled horses, you’ll enjoy day and night game drives, bush walks, camel rides and fly camping. Fishing, kayaking and river swimming are also on the menu, as well as cultural visits to neighbouring villages.
Stay: Five nights at Sosian Lodge
MAASAI MARA
Your Kenyan experience culminates at a small tented camp in the 74,000-acre Mara North Conservancy on the border of the famed Maasai Mara National Reserve. Visitor numbers are strictly controlled in this area, so you can expect to see a lot more animals than people – especially as the Mara itself has an abundance of game.
As well as hosting the annual migration of over one million wildebeest, zebras and gazelle between July to October, the Mara provides year-round sanctuary to elephants, big cats and countless numbers of plains species. In all, a fabulous passing parade of wildlife for you to watch on morning and evening game drives in vehicles specially adapted for brilliant photography. Or on escorted savannah walks alongside incredibly experienced, knowledgeable Maasai guides. Hot air balloon safaris offer another fabulous vantage point from which to experience the majesty of the Mara.
Stay: Three nights at Offbeat Mara
