ANTIGUA
Board a flight to Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala
Note: There are no direct flights between the UK and Guatemala. There are flights via Madrid with Iberia, but the most common way to get there when combining with Belize is to fly via the US. There are flights with British Airways/American Airlines via Miami and other cities in the US.
After landing in Guatemala City, you will be driven 45 minutes to your hotel in the colonial gem of Antigua.
The former capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala, Antigua was largely destroyed by an earthquake in the 1700s but over the past few centuries has been superbly restored and is now a designated World Heritage Site. Strolling around its cobblestone streets past vibrant markets, ruined convents and art galleries is a great way to soak up the city’s alluring charm.
A walking tour will show you the Antigua Cathedral, the Merced Monastery and San Francisco Monastery, but those more active may want to go mountain biking or even climb a volcano in a 4×4. Your stay includes a private candle-lit dinner at La Cupula, Panza Verde – a small intimate room with a beautiful vaulted ceiling.
Stay: Three nights at Hotel San Rafael – Bed & breakfast
LAKE ATITLAN
Transfer from Antigua to Lake Atitlan, stopping en route at the archaeological sites of Comalapa and Iximiché where you’ll take part in a Mayan spiritual ceremony.
Lake Atitlan once called the most beautiful lake in the world by Aldous Huxley, is ringed by the towering cones of the San Pedro, Atitlan and Toliman volcanoes. Indian villages surround the lake shore, each village with its own costume and textile design and specialising in different crafts. The following day you will have chance to visit the different villages and see the textiles and handicrafts which are made in the area.
Your hotel for the next two nights is the beautiful Casa Palopó. A Relais & Chateaux property, overlooking the lake and with views of all three volcanoes.
Stay: Two nights at Casa Palopó – Bed & breakfast
TIKAL
From Lake Atitlan you will return to Guatemala City and fly north to the jungle of the Peten.
Over the next two days you will explore one of Central America’s most impressive archaeological sites, the Mayan ruins at Tikal.
Your hotel is inside the national park, which means you have unprecedented access to the ruins. Your expert local guide will take you on a tour of the ruins, which are surrounded by dense jungle and home to howler monkeys and tropical birds. The ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and were famously used as a backdrop in Star Wars. You will explore the impressive complexes and temples, before returning to your hotel for a refreshing dip in the outdoor pool.
Stay: Two nights at the Jungle Lodge – Half-board
MOUNTAIN PINE RIDGE
From Tikal you will be driven across the border into Belize where you will be transferred to your lodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.
Gaia River Lodge has an excellent position, overlooking the spectacular Five Sisters waterfalls and surrounded by forest. As well as horseback riding along wilderness trails, you’ll have your days free to relax, explore caves, go zip-lining and visit nearby Mayan ruins.
Stay: Two nights at Gaia River Lodge – Bed & breakfast
AMBERGRIS CAYE
Your honeymoon ends with blissful relaxation at a boho-chic beach resort on Ambergris Caye. After a short flight you will land at San Pedro airstrip and transferred by water taxi to your hotel. You’ll be staying in a beautiful casita surrounded by sand and palm trees and cooling breeze from the ocean.
Indulge in a spa treatment, relax by the pool or in a hammock or if you’re looking for some adventure you can dive in the crystal-clear waters of the Ambergris Caye.
