As the first signs of summer begin to appear in the Arctic, venture to the northernmost settlement of Longyearbyen and discover the Arctic in all its beauty.
ARCTIC

ABOUT THE ITINERARY

Sunny winter is the most popular time of year to visit Svalbard and spans the months from February to May. Ice and snow still dominate the landscape, but light is beginning to break through and creates some wonderful conditions for exploring the Arctic.

Designed with families and active travelers in mind, the ‘Family Arctic Adventure’ is a great way to experience life in the Arctic circle and see some of its beautiful scenery and wildlife. Days are spent snowmobiling, dog sledding and you’ll even set foot in a mineshaft!

For those with more time on their hands, an extension to Tromso or Oslo is also possible.

Day 1

ARRIVAL IN LONGYEARBYEN

Fly from Oslo to Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost settlement and the largest town in the Svalbard archipelago.

You will be driven to your hotel on the outskirts of the town, a modern twist on the historic cabins used by coal miners and now a fun and quirky base for exploring the region.

After check-in you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner at the hotel.

Stay: Three nights at Coal Miners’ Cabins including breakfast.

Day 2

SNOWMOBILE SAFARI

On today’s adventure you will travel by snowmobile to Elveneset, a phenomenal outlook point with views over the Tempelfjord and Tempelfjellet. En route you’ll experience the everchanging landscape of Svalbard, travelling through valleys with soaring mountains on all sides and baron Arctic tundra. On arrival at Elveneset you’ll have a well-earned hot drink and chance to take in the breathtaking views, before returning to town.

In the afternoon you will experience historic Longyearbyen, venturing into one of the town’s disused mineshafts. After being kitted out in overalls, helmets and with your headlamp on, you will head into Mine #3, learning about life underground and seeing the machinery and equipment that was once used before the mine closed in 1996.

From the mine entrance you’ll enjoy wonderful views of the Adventfjord, before returning to your hotel.

Day 3

DOG SLEDDING

This morning you will experience a traditional way of exploring the region, by dog sled.

Once the dogs have been harnessed, lean back and let them take you away into the wilderness. Your destination is Bolterdalen, a beautiful valley surrounded by mountain tops. In winter the activity is on a specially built sled and takes place under the star-filled skies. At the end of the excursion you’ll even get to meet cutest litter of puppies!

After a morning exploring by sled, the afternoon is spent in one of Svalbard’s most beautiful ice caves. With your guide you will venture into the cave in a snowcat – a comfortable and fun way to explore the cave and traverse up and over the moraine.

After discovering this unique world of ice and snow you’ll return to town for your final night in the Arctic.
