SPECTACULAR SCENERY
It may be the capital of Bhutan, but Thimphu moves at a peaceful pace and is still very much in tune with its cultural heritage. From incredible monasteries to traditional markets and jaw-dropping mountain scenery, there is a lot to be discovered.
Set in a valley at an altitude over 2,300 metres, Thimphu was declared the new capital of Bhutan back in the 1960s and has been enticing travellers ever since. Make the most of the enchanting scenery and spectacular valley views by wandering along winding mountain paths.
The city’s star attraction is the mighty Trashi Chhoe Dzong, an impressive fortress located on the western banks of the Wang Chhu River. With three-storey towers and striking red-and-gold triple-tiered roofs, it is a wonder to behold and easily Thimphu’s most impressive structure. Originally built in the 18th century, today the dzong hosts the annual teschu festivities.
Don’t leave Thimphu without browsing the famous ‘weekend market’ – the largest of its kind in the country. Traders come down from far and wide to sell their wares on both sides of the river, with stalls displayed with chillies, incense and all kinds of knick-knacks. Bargaining is expected and a real highlight!
