MOST VIVACIOUS PLACE
Within easy flying distance of the UK, Spain’s northern region is the perfect short-break candidate, serving up a mix of cutting-edge architecture and dramatic coastlines, verdant countryside, historic port towns and a sensational cuisine.
Celebrated for its art and architecture, Barcelona is Spain’s most vivacious city. The colossal Sagrada Familia basilica is of course a ‘must see’ here in the city of Gaudi, but make time too for the indoor markets at art deco La Boqueria, and for a leisurely stroll along Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s main artery. For art lovers, Museu Picasso and Fundació Joan Miró are stocked with the incredible work of their namesakes.
Compared with Paris, Rome and Amsterdam, even its arch rival Barcelona, Madrid has fewer essential sights or striking works of architecture. What it does have is elegant boulevards, manicured parks and outstanding repositories of European art in the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. The city’s second draw is its nightlife, but you’ll also want to keep something in reserve for a day trip to the ancient walled city of Toledo.
The coast of northern Spain is regarded for its beauty, lined by rugged cliffs long stretches of fine sand. Situated on the Bay of Biscay, San Sebastian is one of the most alluring spots on the coast, famed for the stunning beaches of Playa de la Concha and Playa de Ondarreta. This dazzling resort town is also known for its illustrious dining scene, boasting world-renowned restaurants, innovative chefs and some of the best pintxo bars in the country!
