TIGER’S NEST MONASTERY
A feature on one of the most beautiful short treks in Bhutan, Bumdra High Camp enjoys a stunning location high above the fabled Tiger’s Nest Monastery, where unimpeded views over the snowcapped Himalaya await.
Bumdra High Camp is an integral part of the two-day Bumdra Trek, which offers hikers the unique opportunity to descend towards the Tiger’s Nest Monastery from above, rather than uphill on the usual tourist trail. The remarkable views and lack of crowds make a stay here a worthwhile addition to any Bhutan itinerary. Despite its remote location, this seasonal camp is surprisingly comfortable with proper bedding, soft pillows, hot water bottles and a separate bathroom tent.
JOURNEY TO THE DRUKGYAL MONASTERY
The camp’s traditional dome tents are set up at 3,800 metres in a meadow just below the Bumdra Monastery – which you’ll reach after four- to six-hours of trekking from Sang Choekhor. After a relaxing lunch, you can ascend a further 400m to take in the most sublime view of the mountains with the clouds floating beneath your feet. As the sun sets over the Haa region, you’ll sit down to a simple, hearty meal in the dining tent. A bonfire under the stars completes the magical experience.
The next day you’ll walk down to Tiger’s Nest, stopping to visit some of the sacred temples that many travellers miss on the classic route. Once there, you can walk the main trail back down to Paro, or extend your journey to the Drukgyal Monastery.
