A TAPESTRY OF CULTURE AND NATURE
There is so much to be discovered in the southern regions of Oaxaca and Chiapas. Although some of the poorest states in Mexico, the ancient ruins, indigenous towns, beaches and gastronomic delights of these colonial heartlands make them well worth visiting.
Just a short flight away from the capital, the city of Oaxaca was founded some 500 years ago and has since been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A stroll around its centre will introduce you to impressive colonial buildings, vibrant indigenous markets and landmarks like the Santo Domingo Church.
But Oaxaca also opens the door to charming traditional villages and relics of ancient civilisations. The nearby site of Monte Alban, meaning ‘White Mountain’, is considered one of the finest ruins across Latin America. Home to the Zapotec people between 500 BC and 800 AD, the site has a spectacular mountain top location overlooking the valleys of Oaxaca.
Continue your rich cultural experience in Chiapas where you’ll find tropical scenery, sandy beaches, Mayan ruins and a strong cultural heritage. Most visitors base themselves in San Cristobal del las Casas, a picturesque town with white, stucco walls and narrow cobbled streets. You’ll be within reach of historical sites like the Sumidero Canyon, and colourful villages where age-old traditions and artisanal crafts are maintained by the indigenous people.
A highlight of Chiapas are the mystical ruins of Palenque. Surrounded by dense jungle and waterfalls in the northern highlands, the marvels of this ancient settlement rarely fail to impress.
