SCENIC JEWEL
Ringed by pine forests and the towering cones of three volcanoes, Lake Atitlán is the jewel in Guatemala’s scenic crown.
Aptly described by writer Aldous Huxley as ‘Como with the additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes’, Lake Atitlán is a charming addition to any Guatemala itinerary. Situated over 1,500m above sea level in Guatemala’s highlands, the constantly changing hue of the blue waters makes this one of the most beautiful lakes you’ll find anywhere.
Three volcanoes – San Pedro, Atitlán and Toliman – march in a circle around the lake whilst a dozen or so Mayan villages nestle on its shore, each with its own style of dress, textile design and handicraft specialities. When not learning about the locals’ daily routines and age-old customs, you can bargain for souvenirs at the nearby town of Chichicastenango, which hosts a vast indigenous market on Thursdays and Sundays.
You’ll be able to go on great walks through the villages and farmlands, set off on mountain biking and kayaking expeditions and take serene boat trips – a great way to relax and absorb the stunning scenery. Some of the area’s best views can be had from the summit of Cerro de Oro (the Gold Hill), but for those feeling adventurous, nothing beats flying over the volcanoes themselves in a helicopter.
For a tranquil lakeside stay and an enthralling insight into Guatemalan life, we can design your perfect visit to Lake Atitlán.
