LEADING ECO-TOURISM DESTINATION
Rich in beauty and biodiversity, the mystical cloud forests of Monteverde invite you to nurture your connection with the natural world.
Set high in the verdant Tilaran mountains, these mist-shrouded forests offer a refreshingly cool retreat from the warmer, tropical areas of the country. Despite being at the end of a long, somewhat bumpy drive, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve is one of Costa Rica’s most popular places to visit and a leading eco-tourism destination.
Officially established in 1972, Monteverde has grown into one of Central America’s most important wildlife sanctuaries. The entire reserve is a hotbed of biodiversity, brimming with rare birds, colourful amphibians, butterflies, and exotic plants. As well as more tree species than the entirety of the USA, all six of Costa Rica’s wild cats can be found here – namely jaguars, ocelots, pumas, oncillas, margays, and jaguarundis.
Criss-crossed with over 13km of trails, the area is a fabulous walking destination. Birdwatchers flock here hoping to catch a glimpse of the resplendent quetzal, revered by the Mayans and Aztecs, from soaring canopy walkways, but you can also visit insect museums and learn about the unique properties of rainforest plants. For thrill-seekers, there are sky-high zip lines, horseback riding, and the opportunity for nocturnal nature walk – the cloud forest really comes alive at night!
