CHARMING COASTAL TOWN
Sandwiched between the sweeping Namib Desert and the endless Atlantic Ocean, Swakopmund is a charming coastal town with more to offer than first meets the eye. Choose from an array of desert adventures or simply stroll about the town and soak up its colonial charm.
Perched on Namibia’s western coast, most visitors to Swakopmund come to recharge whilst travelling between the north and south of the country. The wide, palm-lined streets are filled with an excellent selection of restaurants, guest houses and cafes, whilst the beautiful old German architecture echoes the town’s colonial past and gives Swakopmund a unique character.
Swakopmund is hailed as the adventure capital of Namibia, and is the perfect place to try your hand at a variety of activities. Why not embark on a kayak safari to Pelican Point to get up close to the marine life, or venture out into the Namib desert for sand boarding, quad biking and – for the truly fearless – sky-diving. The Swakop River is a fine spot for birders, where flamingos, Cape cormorants, whimbrels and curlews can be seen in and around the tidal lagoons.
If you have time to venture further afield, Cape Cross is a few hours drive from Swakopmund and is home to a huge colony of Cape fur seals numbering over 100,000 individuals!
