Damaraland

A remote wilderness, dramatic landscapes and fascinating wildlife.
DISCOVER DAMARALAND

RUGGED BEAUTY

As well as fascinating desert-adapted wildlife, it is the rugged beauty of Damaraland that entices travellers to this remote wilderness. Colossal sandstone cliffs, towering mountains and ancient geological formations make up one of Namibia’s most dramatic landscapes.

Unfolding between the Skeleton Coast and Etosha, the geography of Damaraland is simply breath-taking. Casting a shadow over the desert highlands and rocky plains are some of the highest mountains in the country.

The ruggedness of this remote wilderness has produced some remarkable wildlife, including some of the last free-roaming desert-adapted elephants in the world. Desert-adapted rhino are also present and often seen traversing the sand dunes. Add to the list thriving populations of Hartmann’s zebra, gemsbok, springbok, Damara dik-dik and kudu, and you have an unforgettable wildlife destination.

When you’re not tracking wildlife in the north, venture to the south of Damaraland to discover a wealth of San artwork and geological features. Twyfelfontein is particularly impressive, with hundreds of rock engravings depicted on the sandstone cliffs that date back to 3300 BC. The 200 million-year-old Petrified Forest – a collection of fossilised tree trunks on a sea of sandstone – is also well worth a visit.

As one of Namibia’s least populated regions, you can enjoy the delights of Damaraland with few others. Get in touch with one of our Africa specialists to start putting together your luxury tailor-made trip.
